What is a Gryphon?

The Gryphon is a Greek mythical creature with the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion. It was known to the ancients as the guardian of treasures. Since the Gryphon was thought to signify the strengths of the University of Guelph, it was chosen as the mascot of the University's sports teams after the University was founded in 1964. Hence the University's varsity teams are called the Guelph Gryphons. (Prior to the the founding of the University of Guelph in 1964, the on-campus sports teams associated with the Ontario Agricultural College were the Redmen.)
